Artist Statement:
Rituals of Hunger explores food as a ceremony and how we navigate desire, indulgence, control and consumption and responsibility. The Sushi box portrays order, control and containment through symmetry and repetition. The take out box displays excess with heavy sauce and urgency with the packaging a world driven with more quantity than quality. The schnitzel represents layers of protection and transformation under pressure. The whole squid with no disguise forces acknowledgement of responsibility. The calamari rings highlight cyclical and repetitive patterns in life. The paired sushi rolls symbolize simple versus grand, two ways of life. The spicy fried dish represents contemporary culture, seeking high intensity and instant gratification. The last fried dish with green onions shows freshness breaking through scorch and the hope of balance. The goal was to reflect on our own rituals, consumption and responsibility towards our environment.
